Over Memorial Day weekend, the kids and I made the trek home in my Cayenne S to Birmingham, Alabama to visit with family. And as fortune would have it, we were rear ended by a full size Toyota Tundra 10 miles from our destination in a heavy downpour on I-59. Luckily, though some may not agree, the Cayenne was the only thing that suffered any injuries as a result of the collision. But that’s not what this short story is really about….After checking in on my car at the Tom Williams Porsche Dealership post accident, I convinced my Dad to drive a few miles down the road to Barber Motorsports Park.
I’m sure most of you have heard about this Park and possibly considered attending their pricey, but highly regarded Porsche Driving School. (I’m still saving my pennies….) But, the Park is also host to an incredible museum displaying over 1200 vintage motorcycles, a substantial collection of Lotus and other racecars , and is the largest collection of its kind in the world. My Dad (current owner of a 2002 Boxster), and I wandered through the multistory, beautifully laid out museum and tried to keep from drooling all over the pristine collection. There are a couple of Porsches on the basement floor which we could see from a distance, but this floor is closed to the public except during special events.
Unbeknownst to me, my Dad pointed out a significant number of motorcycles that he was familiar with or had owned in his pre-kid life, and though I’m not very knowledgeable as to motorcycles, his knowledge, the quantity of highly polished chrome and extensiveness of the collection was no less than inspiring. So, next time you’re in that part of the country, avoid I-59 during heavy rainfall, but be sure to check out Barber Motorsports Park and their museum!
