Decades ago, I saw an interview from one of the enduranceraces. The reporter asked, "what kind of car do yourecommend people to have if they want to get into racing?"The driver unequivocally answered, "to save money andheadache, I suggest a Porsche 911. It's a race car out of thebox." He went on to explain that the engine, brakes andsuspension are ready for track duties.
That interview alwaysplays out in my mind when I'm pulling back into the paddocksof VIR on our DE events. My smile? Ear-to-ear in amazementof what our cars can really do. I constantly see other marquesat the track, on jacks, broken, after few laps while the Porscheskeep going lap after lap to finish multiple day events.
Performance reliability!Porsche AG has always heralded their cars as comfortableperformance daily drives to work. And on weekends, they canbe driven to the track and be ready again for their daily dutiesthe following Monday. Ferrari tries to follow this suit, but Ithink they are far from it. I have spoken to some mechanics atperformance car shops in our area, and they all say that theyhave seen most of the Ferraris in town for some major repairprematurely in their service life.
Proven reliability on the road and performance at the track is what makes Porsches reignover any other marquee in the world.I am neither a race driver nor an expert in the automotive engineering field, but what I mentioned above is what makes this car the perfect car for me. I am just one FSR member who enjoys doing all the activities that our club has to offer. My best times in the club are talking to great friends and genuine enthusiasts, but driving the same car to all these events is also enjoyable for me.
Whether it is High Performance Driver's Education (DE), interstate drives to visit friends and relatives, the monthly breakfast meets, or concours d'elegance, all of these events with one car and the same factory-recommended streets tires are great. Porsche engineers brilliantly pulled off this feat. P.S. It has truly been my pleasure to be your Webmaster for two years.
I enjoyed every minute of it. I'm not going away, just going back to sea duty as a Sailor should. I will still be here in the area, and as I expressed to the leadership of our club, I will gladly continue to help out as long as my squadron is not out at sea. ☺
