We’ll begin the event again this year at Checkered Flag Porsche on Virginia Beach Blvd at 1:00 PM for the all-important “Weigh-In”. Each car will pull into the Service Check-In bay at the dealership to temporarily unload the food donations to be weighed. We will then enjoy a light lunch sponsored by the dealership and spend some time in the showroom planing our next purchase.
Why weigh the food you may ask? Because Checkered Flag has again donated a beautiful Porsche leather jacket to the driver of the car that donates the most food, by weight, for the Marathon. The winning total last year was 366 pounds loaded into the back of a 944; another number that would be nice to beat.
In the interest of fairness, and to keep with the intent of the food drive, the competition will include some guidelines. First of all, the food has to be loaded into a Porsche. Yes, we know Cayennes are Porsches too but, sorry, only cars will count. And the ‘judges’ will be looking for “NASCAR-like” rule interpretations of the Marathon’s intent of collecting food for holiday meals. Turkeys and the fixins’ are the goal; not low-volume/high weight bags of flour intended to bake the desert pie or cases of soda to wash them down.
We’ll line up in a caravan for the short drive to Pembroke Mall and the Mayflower Food drop-off at about 2:00 PM. We’ll get reorganized at the mall, then drive to unload the cars with the help of the many willing volunteers, and present a check from the proceeds of the Air and Auto Classics charity car show. The buzz of activity at the Mayflower Marathon is exciting and adds to the fun of supporting this very worthy cause.
After the trunks are emptied, we’ll reorganize again into a caravan for a fun run along a yet-to-be-decided route to a yet-to-be-decided location. Shouldn’t matter to you at this point but expect both to be good choices! We’ll have some food and refreshments sponsored by First Settlers when we get to where ever we decide to go. Plan on arriving at the party location about 4:00 PM and staying for a few hours.
We’re still working on the details so stay tuned to the website and look for information via mass email. But you have enough information now to circle the date on your calendar and start shopping for some holiday groceries. Remember, this is all about helping those not as fortunate as we are during the holiday season.
See you there!!!
