Carl Bess
About
Carl’s journey with Porsche began in the mid-nineties on a dare from his brother-in-law to purchase a 1981 hellblaumetallic 928. Later, in October 1997, Carl joined the local PCA chapter in Richmond, Virginia, where he and his wife Karen resided at the time. Those meetings not only deepened his admiration for Porsche engineering but also fostered cherished camaraderie with fellow Porsche enthusiasts.
As an Air Force maintenance officer, the tragic events of 9/11 ushered in a new era of assignments and deployments for Carl. Faced with an uncertain future, he reluctantly parted ways with his 928. Following his retirement from the Air Force, which later included a year as an advisor in Kabul, and subsequent employment with DHS, Carl and Karen eventually settled in Norfolk, where the years of being Porsche-less finally caught up with him.
Carl spent the next couple of years researching Porsches and finally, in July of 2021, found a 2009 meteorgraumetallic 997. Recalling his previous PCA experience, Carl immediately reached out to the FSR to renew his membership. Along the way, Carl met neighbor John Greene. the current FSR Chapter Secretary. Encouraged by John, Carl took a step forward, deciding to throw his hat in the ring as John’s successor in a role that John has executed with exceptional distinction – a legacy that will undoubtedly be a challenge to uphold.
